Google expands Dominican Republic digital infrastructure with three subsea cables

Google has announced an expansion of its digital infrastructure in the Dominican Republic through the deployment of three new subsea cable systems: Alisios, Canoa, and OlaLuz. This initiative is part of the company’s ‘Americas Connect’ project, with the first phase of investment expected to exceed $500 million.

The Alisios cable will connect the Dominican Republic with Panama and Chile, while the Canoa cable will link the country to Bermuda. The OlaLuz cable is set to provide a direct connection to Florida. Additionally, Google will establish a new branch of the existing Firmina cable to land in the Dominican Republic, increasing high-capacity connectivity in the Caribbean.

These projects aim to improve network reliability and resilience by providing diverse routes and connecting to geographically separated Google Cloud regions. Dominican government officials, including Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza, stated that these investments position the country as a strategic technological and digital hub for the Caribbean region.
