Google Americas Connect subsea cable expansion

Overview

Google has launched the ‘Americas Connect’ project to expand its global connectivity infrastructure through the installation of several new subsea cables. This initiative aims to strengthen digital links between the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe while increasing network reliability for Google Cloud services.

The project includes the ‘Alisios’ cable, connecting Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Chile, and the ‘Curie’ cable, which links Panama to the west coast of the United States. In the Atlantic and Caribbean, the ‘Canoa’ cable will connect the Dominican Republic to Bermuda, while the ‘OlaLuz’ cable will provide a direct connection between the Dominican Republic and Florida.

Specific focus has been placed on the Dominican Republic, where the first phase of investment is expected to exceed $500 million. In addition to the Alisios, Canoa, and OlaLuz cables, Google plans to establish a new branch of the existing Firmina cable in the country. Dominican government officials noted that these investments are intended to position the nation as a “strategic technological and digital hub for the Caribbean region.”
