Google expands Voltus agreement to build 1GW virtual power plant
Google has significantly expanded its agreement with energy services company Voltus to develop a virtual power plant within the PJM interconnection region in the United States. The updated deal aims for a capacity of up to 1 gigawatt (approximately 1,070 MW), a massive increase from the initial 100-megawatt target. This capacity is comparable to the output of a large nuclear reactor.
Rather than constructing new power plants, the virtual power plant functions by using software to coordinate distributed energy sources and consumers. Voltus will recruit households and businesses to reduce their electricity consumption during peak demand periods in exchange for financial incentives. This can include automated adjustments, such as smart thermostats slightly reducing cooling intensity or utilizing residential battery storage.
Google views this initiative as a critical short-term solution to manage the surging electricity demands of AI data centers. By aggregating the small amounts of energy saved by thousands of individual participants, the project can release significant capacity to the grid when it is most needed. This strategy allows the company to address power shortages while investing in local communities and advancing clean energy goals.
