Google introduces Android app memory limits to combat AI-driven RAM shortage

Google is implementing new memory and performance requirements for Android applications to address global hardware supply constraints. The rapid growth of artificial intelligence has surged demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, causing a shortage and price spike in standard RAM. This has led manufacturers to reduce RAM capacity in some smartphone models to manage costs.

Starting in February 2027, Android developers must meet specific thresholds in three key areas: dynamic memory usage, bitmap memory management, and DEX code optimization. Apps that fail to comply may face reduced visibility or limited publishing capabilities on the Google Play Store. Google is also providing diagnostic tools within the Play Console to help developers identify and fix excessive memory consumption.

Additionally, by April 2027, Google will require apps with sign-in features to support Zero-Tap Sign-In, allowing for the automatic restoration of user credentials when migrating to a new Android device.
