Google's Nuvem Submarine Cable Links United States and Portugal

Google has completed the installation of its new "Nuvem" submarine cable, a trans‑Atlantic fiber‑optic system stretching about 7,000 km. The cable runs from Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, USA, to the terminal at Sines, Portugal, with intermediate landing points in the Bermuda islands and the Azores. It contains 16 fiber‑pair routes and a design capacity of roughly 384 terabits per second, intended to bolster data traffic for cloud services and artificial‑intelligence applications.

The cable was officially inaugurated at a ceremony in Lisbon’s Oceanário, attended by Portuguese officials including Minister Gonçalo Matias and the U.S. ambassador to Portugal, John Arrigo. Financed by Google with national partner MEO, the Nuvem cable adds redundancy to existing Atlantic links such as the Equiano and EllaLink cables, reinforcing Portugal’s ambition to become a digital hub between Europe, Africa and the Americas. Google expects the system to enter service later this year, though some reports suggest full operation may not commence until 2027.
