Google Maps adds live fuel price updates for UK drivers
Google Maps has launched a new feature in the United Kingdom that displays near real-time petrol and diesel prices for local forecourts. The update allows motorists to compare fuel costs directly within the app by searching for nearby stations.
The feature utilizes data from the UK government’s Fuel Finder scheme, which requires petrol stations to report price changes within 30 minutes. This initiative follows recommendations from the Competition and Markets Authority to increase transparency and encourage competition among retailers.
The rollout comes as fuel costs have risen significantly, with diesel prices recently exceeding £2 per litre. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimates that the ability to shop around could save car-owning households an average of £40 per year. While motoring groups like the AA have welcomed the move as a “massive step forward,” some industry experts have raised concerns regarding the consistency and accuracy of the government data feed.
