Google Maps fuel price integration in the UK

Overview

Google Maps has launched a feature in the United Kingdom that displays near real-time petrol and diesel prices for local forecourts. The update utilizes data from the UK government’s ‘Fuel Finder’ scheme, which requires stations to report price changes within 30 minutes.

This integration allows motorists to compare costs directly within the app or via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Unlike other navigation tools that rely on manual user updates, this feature uses mandatory official data. The initiative aims to increase transparency and help drivers avoid expensive stations, potentially offering annual savings for households.

The rollout follows recommendations from the Competition and Markets Authority to encourage competition among retailers. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimates that the ability to shop around could save car-owning households an average of £40 per year. While motoring groups like the AA have welcomed the move as a “massive step forward,” some industry experts have raised concerns regarding the consistency and accuracy of the government data feed. Additionally, reports indicate that Google has integrated this official database into both Google Maps and Waze to assist drivers in finding the cheapest stations.
