Google Maps navigation warnings issued by search-and-rescue teams

Search-and-rescue teams are warning hikers that Google Maps may provide inaccurate estimates for wilderness navigation. Rescuers note that while the app is effective for road travel, its time and distance estimates for backcountry routes can be significantly flawed due to terrain complexity and elevation gain.

In one recent incident on the Howe Sound Trail in British Columbia, Google Maps estimated an 11.2-mile hike would take approximately 5 hours, whereas the rugged terrain typically requires 12 to 14 hours. This discrepancy led to a group of teenagers running out of water and requiring an airlift rescue.

Technical limitations of Google Maps' offline mode also pose risks. While the app allows users to download maps, turn-by-turn navigation for walking and cycling is unavailable without a connection. Additionally, offline maps require frequent updates to remain valid. Alternatives such as Organic Maps and CoMaps are noted for providing more robust, full-featured offline navigation for walking and cycling without requiring constant cellular service.
