Digital navigation risks in wilderness hiking

Concerns regarding hiking safety have increased due to a growing reliance on digital navigation tools. In Scotland, the Skye Mountain Rescue Team reported assisting 20 hikers in a single day on the Skye Trail, noting that travelers often underestimate difficult terrain when depending on electronic devices. Experts warn that issues such as battery failure, loss of cellular service, and physical changes to trails make traditional map and compass skills essential.

Further warnings have been issued by search-and-rescue teams regarding the inaccuracies of specific applications like Google Maps for wilderness use. While effective for roads, the app’s time and distance estimates for backcountry routes can be significantly flawed due to elevation and terrain complexity. For example, on British Columbia’s Howe Sound Trail, a discrepancy between a Google Maps estimate and actual terrain requirements led to a group of teenagers requiring an airlift rescue after running out of water. Rescuers suggest that while offline modes exist, they lack certain turn-by-turn features for walking, leading some to recommend specialized alternatives like Organic Maps or CoMaps.
