Google prepares Android 17 security and customization updates
Google is preparing significant updates for the upcoming Android 17 operating system, focusing on both enhanced cybersecurity and user interface customization.
To combat espionage and fraud, Android 17 will introduce an expanded ‘Advanced Protection’ suite. Key security features include ‘Intrusion Logging,’ which maintains an encrypted, cloud-synced record of sensitive activities like app installations for up to 12 months to assist in digital forensics. Additionally, ‘Accessibility Protection’ will restrict unauthorized apps from using accessibility services to steal passwords or monitor screens. New ‘USB port protection’ will also prevent data extraction from devices when they are locked, limiting connectivity to power only.
On the customization front, leaked code from Google’s ‘Wallpaper & Style’ app suggests major changes to the lock screen. Users will reportedly gain greater control over clock designs and colors to match wallpapers. The update is also expected to allow users to customize the quick-access shortcut buttons at the bottom corners of the lock screen, enabling direct access to preferred apps without unlocking the device. These features are currently in development and are expected to roll out to Pixel devices first.
