Google Android software and security updates

Overview

Google has released several updates for the Android operating system focused on expanding device support and enhancing security features.

In late September, Google released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 6 and Beta 6.1, which expanded testing to the full Pixel 11 lineup. These updates introduced features such as ‘HiLight’ for Messages and ‘Extreme charging’ for Pixel 11 models, while addressing technical issues like status bar glitches and unexpected reboots. Security enhancements included stricter restrictions on programmatic USSD call-forwarding.

Following this, Google released the Android Canary 2609 experimental build. This update introduced a security feature allowing users to ‘Require unlock for Quick Settings’ from the lock screen. This measure is designed to prevent unauthorized users from disabling Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Mobile Data, thereby ensuring stolen devices remain traceable via the Find My network.

In early October, preparations for the full Android 17 release revealed an expanded ‘Advanced Protection’ suite aimed at combating espionage and fraud. New security tools include ‘Intrusion Logging,’ which maintains an encrypted, cloud-synced record of sensitive activities for up to 12 months, and ‘Accessibility Protection’ to prevent unauthorized apps from monitoring screens or stealing passwords. Additionally, ‘USB port protection’ will limit locked devices to power-only connectivity to prevent data extraction.

Customization updates for Android 17 are also expected, with leaked code suggesting enhanced lock screen control. Users may soon be able to customize clock designs and colors to match wallpapers, as well as modify quick-access shortcut buttons at the bottom corners of the lock screen.
