Google releases Android Canary 2609 with lock screen security updates
Google has released the Android Canary 2609 experimental build, which introduces a new security feature designed to prevent unauthorized changes to Quick Settings from the lock screen. This update addresses a common security vulnerability where thieves could disable connectivity to prevent device tracking.
Users can now enable the ‘Require unlock for Quick Settings’ option located under Settings > Display & touch > Lock screen. When activated, the system will require a PIN or fingerprint before allowing changes to critical connectivity settings, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Mobile Data, and Airplane Mode. This feature is intended to complement Google’s Find My network by ensuring a stolen device remains online and traceable.
To maintain usability, non-critical functions such as the flashlight, screen rotation, and dark mode remain accessible without requiring authentication.
