Volkswagen mobile app blocks custom Android ROM users
Volkswagen has updated its connected‑car application to require Google’s Play Integrity API for device authentication. As a result, owners who run privacy‑focused Android variants such as GrapheneOS, LineageOS or /e/OS can no longer access remote functions like battery range, remote charging, cabin pre‑conditioning or service scheduling. The change, confirmed by the automaker, is intended to ensure the app runs only on devices with Google Play Services installed.
The restriction has drawn criticism from the open‑source community, which argues that Play Integrity serves commercial interests rather than genuine security. Developers of GrapheneOS and related ROMs say the API excludes secure, independent Android builds while offering limited protection. Volkswagen has said it is reviewing the issue but does not anticipate an immediate fix for affected users.
