Volkswagen Android app access restrictions

In late July 2026 Volkswagen updated its connected‑car application to require Google’s Play Integrity API, which prevented users of privacy‑focused Android ROMs such as GrapheneOS, LineageOS and /e/OS from accessing remote vehicle features. The automaker said the change was meant to ensure the app runs only on devices with Google Play Services.

A few days later Volkswagen and its performance brand Cupra extended the restriction to all Android devices running Android 12 or older, citing the end of official security support for that platform. The update also blocked custom, Google‑free Android systems, effectively cutting off remote‑control functions like charge status, climate pre‑conditioning and vehicle locating for a broader set of devices.

Both announcements reflect a tightening of security requirements for apps that interact with vehicle data, moving from an initial focus on custom ROMs to a wider ban on older or non‑Google Android versions.
