Google rolls out Android Auto 17.6 update

Google has begun rolling out Android Auto version 17.6 (Build 17.6.6634), which introduces a new dark green app icon and addresses critical stability issues. The update fixes connection errors and crashes previously experienced by users with non-certified aftermarket head units, particularly those using budget display systems from China.

Beyond stability, the update prepares the platform for the ‘Material 3 Expressive’ design language. This upcoming overhaul will introduce interactive widgets for weather, contacts, and garage door controls. Future features include deeper integration of the Gemini AI assistant, Dolby Atmos support, and a potential redesign of the user interface.

Google is also expanding video capabilities, allowing Full-HD YouTube streaming at 60 fps. However, these features are subject to strict safety and subscription requirements: video playback is only permitted when the vehicle is completely stationary, at which point the system switches to audio-only if the vehicle moves. Additionally, using YouTube via the interface will require a YouTube Premium subscription.
