Google Search falsely reported Sam Altman's death due to Wikipedia vandalism

Google Search briefly displayed incorrect information claiming OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had passed away. The error was triggered by malicious vandalism on Altman’s Wikipedia page, which was edited multiple times to include a false death date, a location in Seattle, and unsubstantiated claims of an assassination.

According to reports, the Wikipedia page underwent an extreme burst of activity, with as many as 22 rapid revisions on the day of the incident. While volunteer editors corrected the errors, the automated nature of Google’s Knowledge Graph allowed the false data to be scraped and displayed in search results for approximately 41 minutes.

Google addressed the issue, stating, “Thanks for flagging – this is no longer appearing, and was not a manual change by Google. When people vandalize public info sources, this can affect the information that appears in Search.” The incident highlights vulnerabilities in how search engines automatically extract and aggregate data from open-source platforms like Wikipedia.
