Google introduces new security restrictions for Android sideloading

Google is implementing new security measures on the Android operating system to restrict the sideloading of applications from sources outside the Google Play Store. Central to this rollout is a new tool called ‘Android Developer Verifier’, which aims to verify that manually installed applications are associated with a verified developer account.

One significant change involves a mandatory 24-hour waiting period. Once a user enables permission in developer options to install content from unverified sources, they must wait one day before the installation can be completed. This friction is designed to prevent accidental or malicious installations of malware.

The rollout is being conducted in phases. Mandatory verification is scheduled to begin on September 30 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. A broader global deployment, including expansion into Europe, is expected to continue through 2027.
