Google testing biometric authentication for Chrome Android passwords

Google is testing a new security feature for Chrome on Android that requires biometric authentication before the browser can autofill saved passwords. This update, currently being trialed in the Chrome Canary build, aims to close a security gap where an unlocked device could allow unauthorized access to sensitive web accounts via the integrated password manager.

Under the proposed “Biometric reauth for password filling” setting, users would need to provide a fingerprint, facial recognition, or another supported screen lock method whenever an authentication field is selected on a webpage. This adds a layer of protection that prevents third parties from accessing private accounts or banking services even if they have temporary physical access to an unlocked smartphone.

Google previously tested a similar requirement over a year ago, but the feature was removed before reaching the stable version of Chrome. While the feature is currently available as an experimental flag in Canary, a specific release date for the stable version of Chrome has not yet been announced.
