Google Chrome biometric password authentication testing
Overview
Google is testing a security feature for Chrome on Android that requires biometric authentication before the browser can autofill saved passwords. Currently being trialed in the Chrome Canary development build under the flag ‘Biometric reauth for password filling’, the update would require users to provide a fingerprint, facial recognition, or another supported screen lock method when an authentication field is selected.
The measure aims to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive web accounts or banking services if a user’s device is already unlocked. While Google previously tested a similar requirement over a year ago, the feature was removed before reaching the stable version of Chrome. No specific release date for the stable version has been announced.
