Google to integrate native YouTube support into Android Auto

Google is introducing native YouTube support to Android Auto, allowing users to stream video directly through the official app rather than relying on third-party software. The update includes a new visual interface based on the Material 3 Expressive design language, featuring dynamic animations, new typography, and customizable widgets.

For safety reasons, video streaming is only permitted while the vehicle is stationary. If the car begins to move, the video feed will automatically stop, though audio playback will continue in the background. This background audio feature is specifically noted as a service for YouTube Premium subscribers. The video quality is expected to reach Full HD at 60 fps.

The rollout of these features is tied to the adoption of Android 16 and varies by vehicle manufacturer, with a major phase of distribution planned between summer and autumn 2026. Due to the high data and energy demands of high-definition streaming, using a wired connection is recommended during extended stops.
