Google to invest 13 billion euros in Finland AI infrastructure
Google has announced a major investment of at least 13 billion euros in Finland over the next two years to develop artificial intelligence infrastructure. This project, described as the company’s largest in Europe, involves the construction of at least three new data centers in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, as well as the expansion of an existing facility in Hamina.
To power these facilities, Google has signed a 22-year power purchase agreement with the Finnish energy company Fortum. The deal allows Google to acquire up to 50% of the electricity produced by the Loviisa nuclear power plant, ensuring a stable and predictable energy supply for its AI models, including Gemini.
Economic projections for the project vary. Google estimates the investment will create approximately 37,000 jobs during the construction phase and contribute roughly 3.6 billion euros annually to Finland’s GDP. However, some Finnish officials have noted that the net domestic impact may be lower, suggesting that 70–80% of the investment may go toward imported hardware, and the actual GDP growth could be less than 1% cumulatively.
