Google to invest €13 billion in Finland's AI and energy infrastructure
Google has announced a major investment of at least €13 billion in Finland's digital and energy infrastructure during 2027 and 2028. This initiative, which represents the company's largest single investment in Europe, aims to expand AI capabilities by building three new data centers in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, while also expanding an existing facility in Hamina.
To power these facilities, Google has entered into a 22-year power purchase agreement with Fortum to secure up to 50 percent of the Loviisa nuclear power plant's capacity from 2030 to 2049. The deal is intended to provide the long-term revenue certainty required to support a €1 billion program to extend the plant's operational life until 2050. Additionally, Google is investing in onshore wind projects and a 94 megawatt battery system near Kajaani to enhance grid stability.
The project is expected to support over 37,000 jobs during the construction phase and approximately 7,000 permanent roles once operational. Economically, the investment is projected to contribute €3.6 billion annually to Finland's GDP. The plan also includes community funds dedicated to biodiversity, education, and research.
