Google updates Chrome with Gemini AI for enhanced scam protection

Google has updated its Chrome browser security through the Enhanced Protection feature within Safe Browsing. This update introduces a more sophisticated defense system against online scams, including phishing, social engineering, and fake antivirus notifications.

A key change is the implementation of a two-tier warning system. Instead of a single full-screen red alert, Chrome will now distinguish between suspicious sites—which display specific icons and colors to indicate potential risk—and dangerous sites, which continue to trigger the high-certainty full-page red warning.

To improve detection, Google is utilizing its Gemini AI model on the server side. This model analyzes page content to identify impersonated brands, site intent, and the probability of fraud. By moving some analysis to the server, Google aims to provide broader protection across all users who enable Enhanced Protection. Google claims this mode makes users ten times safer from various online threats compared to standard protection levels.
