Google updates privacy policy regarding Gmail and Photos data

Google has revised its privacy policy, effective October 16, 2026, introducing an exception to its long-standing pledge not to use content from Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos for personalized advertising.

The change applies to users who opt into Personal Intelligence features, which allow services like Google Search and Gemini to access data across Google Workspace and Photos to provide tailored responses and recommendations. Under the new terms, information extracted from these connected apps—such as hotel booking details from an email—can also be used to influence the personalized ads a user sees.

Google clarified that advertisers do not have direct access to the underlying content of Gmail, Drive, or Photos, nor do they receive personally identifying information like names or email addresses. Additionally, the company stated it will not use sensitive categories, including race, religion, sexual orientation, or health data, for ad targeting. Users can manage these permissions through the Data & Privacy section of their Google Account by adjusting Personalization settings and disconnecting relevant services.
