Google privacy policy and child safety updates
Overview
Google has implemented a new privacy policy regarding its ‘Personal Intelligence’ features, which integrate the Gemini chatbot and AI-driven search modes. Effective October 16, 2026, the policy allows data from Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos to be used for personalized advertising if users opt into these AI features. This change represents a departure from a 2021 commitment to not use such content for ad targeting. Google has clarified that the data usage occurs only when users actively link these services through the opt-in process.
Following these changes, a recent update to the privacy terms briefly included an exception for Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos that could have allowed personal data to be used for personalized advertising via AI-powered personalization. While the specific version of the policy allowing this usage is no longer accessible, it remains unclear if Google permanently retracted the change or simply removed the version from public view.
Separately, Google announced a redesign of its advertising policies regarding child safety. Starting January 11, 2027, the policy on child sexual abuse and exploitation will be renamed ‘Child Safety’ and moved into a standalone category. The new structure will utilize two penalty tiers: severe violations involving sexualization or exploitation will result in immediate and permanent account termination, while other violations involving non-sexual content that could be misused will trigger a minimum seven-day warning period.
