Split: Police arrest Torcida leaders after Nazi chants

Croatian authorities have launched a criminal investigation following a fan march in Split involving Nazi and antisemitic chants. The incident occurred on October 15, ahead of a football match between Hajduk Split and Ajax.

Police have reported 23 individuals for suspected incitement of violence and hatred. Among those detained is Stipe Lekić, a former secretary of the Torcida fan group, who surrendered to police. An investigative judge in Split has ordered investigative detention for 13 suspects to prevent flight or the repetition of the offense.

Witnesses and video footage reported chants such as ‘Arise, Adolf’, references to Auschwitz, and insults directed at Anne Frank. The Torcida fan group issued a statement calling the media coverage a ‘national scandal’ and ‘media hysteria’, alleging selective justice and a campaign of persecution against fans.

Legal experts have noted that Hajduk Split could potentially seek compensation from fans if the club faces fines from UEFA due to this behavior. Investigations are ongoing as police review footage to identify further participants.
