Extremist displays by football fans in Split

Overview

Concerns have emerged regarding the rise of extremist ideologies among Croatian football supporters in Split. Observers noted that members of the Torcida fan group displayed gestures and chants associated with fascism and Nazism at the Poljud stadium and in the streets, suggesting a broader cultural climate of nationalist sentiment and historical revisionism. Following a march prior to a Hajduk vs. Ajax match on October 15, Croatian authorities launched a formal investigation into the use of Nazi slogans and antisemitic chants, including references to Adolf Hitler and Auschwitz. Witnesses and video footage reportedly captured chants such as ‘Arise, Adolf’ and insults directed at Anne Frank.

As of October 21, police have identified 24 individuals suspected of public incitement to violence and hatred. While 14 individuals have been processed or detained, authorities are actively searching for seven remaining suspects. The incident has drawn condemnation from government officials and the Israeli embassy. In response, the Torcida group released a statement condemning the situation as a ‘national scandal’ and ‘media hysteria.’

On October 23, a member of the Torcida group was arrested in the Livno area of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) following an Interpol warrant issued by Zagreb. In a separate development, Rijeka Archbishop Mate Uzinić issued a strong condemnation of the group’s actions, stating that love for a club should not be demonstrated through hatred of others. He emphasized that while Nazi and Ustaše ideologies must be unequivocally condemned, the response should not devolve into ‘calls for lynching’ or the collective condemnation of all group members.
