Romania economic trends: labor market shifts and trade deficits
Romania is facing several economic challenges, including a significant trade deficit and regional labor market instability. In 2025, the country recorded a trade deficit of approximately 32.74 billion euros, with imports totaling 129.35 billion euros against exports of 96.6 billion euros. A notable paradox exists where the nation exports raw materials and agricultural products only to import finished goods of higher value.
In the Gorj region, the labor market shows signs of weakness with a decreasing number of employees and stagnant incomes. While the national gambling and betting sector saw an 8% increase in average net salaries in August, Gorj reported a loss of workers, with 77,086 employees recorded at the end of August 2026. Additionally, energy sector instability has led to thousands of job losses in the region, including collective dismissals at Minprest Rovinari and the closure of the UATAA Motru plant.
In Satu Mare, the economy is heavily reliant on foreign capital. Approximately 30% of the total turnover in the county is generated by companies controlled by foreign investors from countries including Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Japan, and Hungary. This concentration means that critical decisions regarding local employment and industrial activity are often made abroad.
