Gorj veterinary inspectors respond to sheep pox outbreak in Răchiți

Authorities in Gorj, Romania, have identified a sheep and goat pox outbreak in the village of Răchiți. Following confirmation of the outbreak on September 14, inspectors from the Sanitary Veterinary Directorate (DSV) discovered 523 animals at a summer camp location.

Many of the animals lacked ear tags, making it difficult to verify ownership despite various individuals claiming them. The caretaker of the animals reportedly does not hold an exploitation code for the location. DSV Gorj officials noted a lack of sincerity from the owner regarding animal mortality and stated that attempts to euthanize the sick animals were initially unsuccessful. Consequently, the owner has been prohibited from moving the animals out of the area, and officials are working to resume the euthanasia process.
