Gostivar water contamination sparks political clash in Macedonia

A water supply crisis in the Macedonian town of Gostivar has been confirmed as contaminated with the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, posing serious health risks such as skin, eye and ear infections. Over 80 residents have sought medical assistance and the Directorate for Protection and Rescue publicly acknowledged the bacterial presence.

The government responded by procuring bottled water at a reduced price of 12.5 denars per bottle through the local company Kожувчанка, which also covered the price difference as a corporate social responsibility gesture. Opposition leader Christian Micski and the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) have accused the ruling VMRO‑DPMNE coalition of endangering public health, demanding an investigation and blaming ministers Christian Micski, Health Minister Sasho Klekovski and Interior Minister Panche Toshevski for the mishandling. The health ministry announced that a technical analysis of the water will be released by 20 August, while the opposition continues to call for criminal proceedings.
