Gostivar water crisis: cases fall, safety pending

Overview

The municipal water contamination in Gostivar, first identified on 21 July 2025, remains under emergency management. By late July 2026 crisis headquarters continued hyper‑chlorination, extensive flushing, replacement of chlorination equipment and large‑scale water distribution, delivering more than 100 tonnes of technical water, 78 tonnes of drinking water and roughly 200 000 L of bottled water.

Health‑minister Sasho Klekovski reported that the outbreak entered a quiescent phase, with daily new patient registrations falling to about 80 on 24 July 2026 – roughly half the previous rate – and a total of around 4 000 residents affected. The Infectious‑Disease Commission warned that delayed hepatitis A or E cases could still emerge, although none have been confirmed.

The government expects an official statement within a day confirming that the water will be “technically fit” for use, despite residual chlorine levels still being below safety thresholds for drinking. Opposition parties, particularly the SDSM, have called for the health minister’s resignation and criticised the response. The prime minister affirmed that all remedial measures have been taken and that responsibility will be examined by the public prosecutor.

Overall, the situation has stabilized with no new hospitalisations, but authorities urge residents to maintain precautions until full remediation and certification are completed.
