Human Embryo Gene Editing Advances Spark Designer‑Baby Debate

Scientists have demonstrated the first successful use of Base Editing – a more precise tool than CRISPR – to alter DNA in human embryos. One research team in Cambridge, England used the technique to investigate the role of the NANOG gene during early embryonic development, while a separate group at Columbia University edited genes linked to LDL cholesterol and sickle‑cell disease.
