German specialty beverage market expansion

Overview

In late July 2026 German retailers highlighted a broader surge in niche drink offerings, including cold‑brew teas, soda‑making appliances, and fortified waters. Industry tests praised the Mysoda Glassy soda maker, while health authorities cautioned that many vitamin‑enhanced waters deliver minimal nutritional benefit.

Soon after, two German companies announced concrete product launches that illustrate the trend. Royal Nature introduced a BIO Cold Brew Tea packaged in compostable pyramid bags, featuring lemon‑grass, orange, ginger and citrus aromas, and marketed as a sugar‑free, calorie‑free office and sport drink. Höllinger released an organic pomegranate syrup made from Sicilian bio‑pomegranate juice, aimed at non‑alcoholic drinks and mocktails. Both releases underscore rising consumer demand for plant‑based, clean‑label beverages projected to grow about 6 % annually through 2034.

On 23 July 2026, the Federal Centre for Nutrition (BZfE) and consumer‑protection groups examined 35 vitamin‑fortified water products on the German market. They found many contain only trace plant extracts for colour, while added vitamins offer no proven health advantage; twelve products exceeded the recommended daily intake of a single vitamin, resulting in excess that is simply excreted. The groups warned that marketing terms such as “functional mineral water” or “Vitamin Water” can mislead consumers into thinking the drinks are medicinal, and advised shoppers to read labels carefully and consider plain water as the healthiest hydrator.

No further developments related to this specialty beverage trend have been reported since the July 23 assessment.
