Italy government bond yields rise amid increased debt issuance
Italian government bond yields are rising amid global market volatility driven by inflation, energy costs, and geopolitical tensions. The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) recently conducted auctions for 8 billion euros in various securities, including BTPs and CCTeu, seeing yield increases. Specifically, 5-year BTPs reached a 4.08% yield, while 10-year BTPs hit 4.58%.
Broadly, the 10-year BTP yield has approached 4.5%, marking a three-year high. This trend is mirrored in other major economies, with US Treasuries exceeding 5% and German Bunds at 3.62%. These rising yields increase the cost of servicing public debt, which rose to an average of 2.94% in the first eight months of 2026, up from 2.75% in 2025.
The MEF estimates gross emissions between 59 and 69 billion euros for the remainder of 2026 to cover upcoming maturities. Additionally, a new BTP Green with a 4.40% annual coupon and a 2038 maturity has entered the regulation phase following high investor demand exceeding 110 billion euros.
