Global government bond yield volatility

Overview

Global financial markets continue to experience instability as government bond yields rise. In the United States, 10-year yields have reached their highest levels since November 2023, despite the Treasury Department increasing bond repurchase programs from $2 billion to $6 billion in an attempt to stabilize prices.

This volatility is compounded by Japanese investors repatriating capital through the sale of U.S. debt. In Japan, 10-year yields have surpassed 3% for the first time since 1996. Meanwhile, UK Gilt yields have hit post-2008 highs, and German Bund yields have reached levels not seen since 2011.

Analysts attribute these shifts to structural changes in the global economy, including a transition from globalization toward protectionism, increased defense spending, and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine. These factors are creating inflationary rather than deflationary pressures. Additionally, competition for capital remains high as large technology firms issue significant debt to fund artificial intelligence infrastructure. As traders perceive increased risk regarding high levels of government debt, they continue to demand higher interest to compensate for these perceived risks.
