National Medical Commission expands MBBS seats in Jammu & Kashmir and Bihar
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved the addition of 50 MBBS seats at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, raising its annual intake from 200 to 250 for the 2026‑27 academic year. The approval follows a MARB assessment and a Letter of Permission under the NMC Act. Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Umar Abdullah welcomed the decision, noting that the same 50‑50 seat increase will also apply to Government Medical College Jammu, strengthening medical education in the region.
In Bihar, the NMC granted seat expansions across several government and private colleges for the 2026‑27 session. Patna Medical College & Hospital will admit 250 students (up from 200), and Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College & Hospital in Bhagalpur will admit 150 (up from 120). Two new government colleges are being set up in Mahua (Vaishali) and Ara (Bhojpur) with 100 seats each. Additional increases were approved for Darbhanga Medical College, SKMCH Muzaffarpur, Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College (Gaya), Mahabodhi Medical College, Shyam Lal Chandrashekhar Medical College (Khagaria), Virat Ramayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Katihar Medical College, Narayan Medical College (Sasaram), Madhubani Medical College, Mata Gujri Medical College (Kishanganj) and Lord Buddha Medical College (Saharsa). The NMC has asked the colleges to address faculty shortfalls within 90 days.
