India NEET‑UG 2026 results and MBBS seat expansion
Overview
On 16 July 2026 the National Medical Commission approved a 7 % rise in MBBS seats for the 2026‑27 academic year, adding 9,911 places and taking the national total to 136,939 across 823 colleges, including 25 new institutions. The same day the National Testing Agency released the NEET‑UG 2026 results, confirming 11.21 lakh qualifiers (≈56 %) for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and allied programmes, with women accounting for over 58 % of qualifiers.
The exam was re‑held on 21 June after a paper‑leak allegation, with about 20 lakh candidates sitting at 5,440 centres in 551 Indian cities and 14 overseas locations, offered in 13 languages. Joint toppers were Aryan Gupta (Punjab) and Panshul Bansal (Haryana) with 715 / 720. State toppers included Hadiya Nisar (J&K, AIR 99), Aryaman Solanki (M.P., AIR 46) and Viryah Giri Sahiv (Telangana, AIR 13). Ayush Bhalotia of Bihar, trained in Kota’s Ellen Career Institute, scored 710 to secure AIR 4, underscoring Kota’s continued dominance (four students in the top‑10, 43 in the top‑100).
Uttar Pradesh produced the largest share of qualifiers (≈1.7 lakh); Lakshadweep recorded 43. Karnataka led seat boosts (+1,300), followed by Tamil Nadu (+150), raising the state‑government college allotment there to 5,200 seats.
The combined announcements push the national MBBS seat count beyond 1.3 lakh, reflecting the drive to improve doctor‑to‑population ratios and expand healthcare access across India.
