Indonesia launches 2026 Economic Census across provinces
Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) began door‑to‑door fieldwork for the 2026 Economic Census on 15 June, with data collection scheduled through 31 August. The census, conducted every ten years, will record all economic activity—from micro‑enterprises and households to large firms, agriculture and digital‑based businesses—providing the first comprehensive picture of the nation’s economy in a decade.
Local officials in Semarang, Makassar, Bantul, the Riau Islands and South Sulawesi attended launch ceremonies, emphasizing that accurate data will guide policies for UMKM support, job creation, investment and regional development. Wali Kota Semarang Agustina Wilujeng and Wali Kota Makassar Munafri Arifuddin stressed that the census is a “compass” for targeted economic programs. Governor Ahmad Luthfi of Jawa Tengah highlighted the province’s contribution of roughly 5 million enterprises—about 15 % of Indonesia’s total and 25.8 % of Java’s firms—underscoring the census’ role in shaping national strategy.
BPS heads Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti and deputy Sonny Harry Budiutomo Harmadi assured that respondents’ information will remain confidential and is not linked to taxation. The government urged citizens to cooperate fully, noting that reliable statistics are essential for effective public‑service planning and economic growth.
The nationwide rollout involves over 36 000 enumerators and will serve as the primary data source for future development policies, investment decisions and social programs throughout Indonesia.
