Indonesia 2026 Economic Census rollout

Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) is conducting its 2026 Economic Census to update national economic data, which has not undergone a comprehensive update since 2016. M. Edy Mahmud, BPS Deputy for Balance Sheet and Statistical Analysis, noted that 2016 data is insufficient to reflect current realities, particularly regarding shifts in production and distribution driven by the digital economy.

As of August 7, 2026, data collection has reached approximately 86% of the estimated business population. The census aims to map Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to form a foundation for government policy. However, Hermawati Setyorinny, Chairperson of the Indonesian MSME Association, reported that some business owners are avoiding enumerators due to suspicions that the data will be used for taxation. To address this, experts have suggested involving local community leaders to build trust.

Logistical challenges have also emerged. In Jombang, 13 census officers resigned due to heavy workloads and new employment opportunities, according to BPS Jombang Head Mouna Sri Wahyuni. Meanwhile, in Batam, BP Batam officials are urging active participation, with Deputy for Public Services Ariastuty Sirait reiterating that data confidentiality is legally protected under Law Number 16 of 1997.
