Javier Milei and Axel Kicillof clash over Argentina's economy in New York

Argentine President Javier Milei and Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof are engaged in a high-stakes political and economic confrontation during their respective visits to New York.

Speaking to over 150 investors at The Economic Club of New York, President Milei projected that if his administration is re-elected in 2027, 2028 will be the best economic year in Argentina's history. He emphasized that investments in sectors such as Vaca Muerta, mining, and energy are accelerating and that the government maintains a commitment to fiscal stability and a zero deficit. Milei also addressed market concerns, stating there are no risks to the current economic growth dynamics.

Conversely, Governor Axel Kicillof used his visit to criticize the national government's direction. During a breakfast with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Kicillof denied the existence of an ‘economic miracle,’ describing the current situation as a ‘catastrophe’ characterized by job losses and declining wages. He accused Milei of pursuing a plan of subordination to global powers and wasting Argentina's strategic opportunities.

Kicillof also met with representatives from ten investment funds and over 20 companies in sectors including energy, mining, and biotechnology to promote provincial development. Meanwhile, Milei concluded his trip with a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where they discussed the Malvinas Islands.
