GovMap satellite images reveal Gaza destruction and military sites

Israel's official mapping service, GovMap, briefly released high-resolution satellite imagery that revealed extensive structural destruction and military positions in the northern Gaza Strip. The images, which were updated for 2025, showed the scale of damage in areas such as Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahia, where residential buildings have largely been replaced by rubble.

The unblurred images also identified at least 11 distinct Israeli military sites within a buffer zone established along the Gaza border. These locations included military vehicle positions near eastern Jabalia and logistics areas near former border crossings.

After open-source intelligence researchers identified the unblurred data, GovMap administrators quickly censored the images by re-applying blurring to the sensitive coordinates. While it remains unclear if the exposure was due to a technical error or a policy change, the incident provided a rare, direct visual record of the military presence and the extent of urban destruction in the region.
