Goyang Special City expands public cultural and sports infrastructure

Goyang Special City is implementing a public architecture strategy to enhance urban competitiveness and citizen quality of life by constructing several multi-purpose community facilities. The city is developing four major social infrastructure (SOC) projects scheduled for completion in 2027: the Lifelong Learning Center and Disabled Welfare Dream Center in Haengsin-dong, the Wonheung Complex Cultural Center, the Baekseok National Sports Center, and the Tanhyeon Sports Center.

These facilities are designed to integrate diverse functions such as education, welfare, childcare, libraries, and sports amenities like swimming pools and multipurpose gyms within single locations. Additionally, the city is planning an IP Convergence Content Cluster in Daehwa-dong to support the creative industries, including webtoons, broadcasting, and gaming.

However, the city faces challenges regarding the Siksa Sports Complex facility. Construction has been halted since 2022 at 98% completion due to unpaid construction costs by the Siksa Urban Development Association. The project is currently entangled in legal disputes and bankruptcy proceedings, prompting the city to seek negotiations with the bankruptcy trustee to resolve the impasse.
