Ghana transport fares to increase by 8% from September 26
Public transport fares in Ghana are set to increase by 8% effective Saturday, September 26, 2026. The decision follows weeks of negotiations between the Ministry of Transport and major unions, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).
While transport operators initially demanded increases of 25% to 30% due to rising costs for fuel, spare parts, insurance, and maintenance, they ultimately accepted the 8% adjustment. The GPRTU indicated that this compromise was reached following government assurances regarding potential future reductions in fuel prices.
The new rates will apply to various commercial services, including trotros, shared taxis, and long-distance buses. The agreement aims to balance the financial pressures faced by operators with the economic burden on commuters.
