GPRTU orders drivers to reverse unauthorized transport fare increases
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has ordered commercial drivers to immediately revert to previous transport fares following reports of unauthorized price hikes. The directive comes after commuters complained about increased charges in various areas, including Madina and the Ashaiman route.
According to GPRTU Deputy Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah, a planned 30% fare increase remains suspended. The union had previously reached an agreement with the Transport Ministry to pause any adjustments following the removal of a GHS2 levy from diesel prices. The GPRTU intends to reassess fuel prices at the end of the month before making any formal decisions regarding fare changes.
The union stated that individual drivers do not have the authority to change fares independently and must follow an established consultation process. GPRTU leadership is engaging with local branch executives to verify complaints and is prepared to take disciplinary action or sanctions against members who violate the agreement.
