GPS pilot support system reaches TEKNOFEST finals

High school students Melisa Ülger and Miray Ezgi Yaşar from the Şanlıurfa Science and Art Center (BİLSEM) have advanced to the finals of TEKNOFEST Southeast with a GPS-based pilot support system.

Developed over approximately one year under the guidance of mathematics teacher Şahin Özbilici, the system is designed for use at airports lacking Instrument Landing Systems (ILS). It aims to provide pilots with additional situational awareness during non-precision approaches by using GPS coordinates and existing aircraft avionics to determine if an aircraft is on the correct glide path. The system provides both visual and audible warnings to pilots without requiring any ground-based hardware, addressing the high costs and sustainability challenges associated with installing ILS at every airport.
