Saarbrücken cellar fire forces evacuation of 18 residents

A severe cellar fire broke out in a multi‑family building in Saarbrücken’s St Arnual district on 12 July. Temperatures of 600–700 °C were recorded, prompting the deployment of about 50 firefighters who worked in full protective gear for more than an hour before extinguishing the blaze with foam. Eighteen occupants escaped on their own; no injuries were reported. The incident triggered a “Kernstadtalarm” to keep additional fire units on standby.

Similar incidents were reported across the region. In Ludwigsburg, Germany, 40 firefighters spent five hours investigating dense smoke in a residential‑commercial building’s basement, ultimately finding no active flames. In Hutzdorf, Germany, a machine and field fire burned roughly 3.5 ha of farmland, involving over 160 firefighters and resulting in two minor injuries. A grill trailer caught fire in Reutte, Austria, likely ignited by residual heat, but was quickly extinguished with no casualties. In Baden‑Weikersdorf, Austria, a photovoltaic‑storage battery in a cellar emitted toxic gases; firefighters removed the unit, cooled it in a water‑filled barrel and conducted extensive toxic‑gas monitoring before re‑entering the house.

Other isolated fires included a night‑time blaze at a company in Aschach an der Donau, Austria, and a transition‑home fire in Konstanz, Germany, both controlled without injuries.
