Abruzzo Alpine Rescue Teams Conduct Simultaneous Operations on Gran Sasso

The Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (CNSAS) in Abruzzo conducted two concurrent rescue missions on the Gran Sasso massif. On Corno Piccolo, a 56‑year‑old alpinist from Terni suffered a shoulder trauma while climbing the third rope‑pull of the “Due generazioni” route. The rescue was carried out by an A‑quila‑based helicopter, which winched a technician over 70 m to stabilize and extract the injured climber, who was then flown to the Hospital of L'Aquila.

At the same time, a 62‑year‑old climber from Rome fell on Monte Prena’s “Via dei Laghetti” and injured an upper limb. A Pescara‑based helicopter performed a similar winch operation, stabilised the victim and transferred him to the same hospital. Both missions were coordinated by the Central Operations Technician despite strong wind gusts that made the aerial manoeuvres difficult.

Earlier in the week, another CNSAS team rescued a 39‑year‑old alpinist from Lecco who fell on the Corno Grande (Spigolo Sud‑Sud‑Est) at about 2,700 m. He was also winched to safety and taken to the L'Aquila hospital. These incidents highlight the high operational capacity of the Abruzzo alpine rescue service in one of Italy’s most frequented mountain areas.
