Granada earthquakes cause widespread damage and evacuations
A series of earthquakes in the Granada region of Spain has caused significant disruption and property damage. The seismic activity, which began with a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Alhendín on August 15, has included multiple strong tremors, including a magnitude 4.8 earthquake in the Otura area on August 18.
Technical evaluations by the Junta de Andalucía have inspected 976 public buildings and homes. Of these, 43 properties have been classified as unsafe for use. While 705 buildings (72.2%) were found to have no significant damage and 217 (22.2%) were classified as requiring further review, no buildings have been declared in a state of total ruin.
The impact on residents has been substantial, with 458 families forced to evacuate their homes, primarily in Las Gabias, Armilla, and Granada capital. Many displaced persons are staying with relatives or in the Inturjoven shelter.
Financial consequences are mounting, with the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros registering 12,531 claims for material damage. Preliminary estimates place the total cost of damages at over 35 million euros. Emergency services have managed thousands of incidents and communications throughout the week.
