Granada City Council Calls for Lower Airport Fees to Attract New Flights
The People's Party (PP) group in Granada's municipal council has tabled a motion requesting the Spanish government and airport operator AENA to reduce the airport charges at Federico García Lorca Granada‑Jaén Airport. The proposal aims to make the airport more attractive to airlines, enabling the launch of new routes, higher flight frequencies and stronger national and international connectivity.
Local officials say airlines view the current fees as a barrier to profitability for medium‑size airports. Mayor‑designate Jorge Saavedra stressed that “the city cannot keep missing opportunities” and that a competitive fee structure is essential for Granada’s tourism growth, upcoming bid for European Capital of Culture 2031, and broader economic development. The provincial tourism board has already doubled its budget to €5 million to support promotional efforts.
