Granada earthquake aftermath leaves residents displaced and seeking aid

A series of approximately 1,700 earthquakes in the province of Granada has left significant residential damage and displaced more than 200 residents. While the primary seismic activity has subsided, many families remain in provisional housing awaiting technical inspections, repairs, or safety authorizations to return to their homes.

In response to the crisis, local representatives from the VOX party in several municipalities—including Maracena, La Zubia, Ogíjares, Armilla, Churriana de la Vega, Cúllar Vega, Alhendín, Otura, Gójar, and Las Gabias—have filed motions to request aid from the Junta de Andalucía, the Provincial Council of Granada, and the Spanish Government.

The proposed measures include extraordinary exemptions from the Property Tax (IBI) for damaged or evacuated homes and a 95% reduction in the Tax on Constructions, Installations, and Works (ICIO) for necessary repairs. Additionally, there are calls for the central government to implement full tax exemptions and for municipalities to conduct updated diagnostic reports on the seismic effects within their jurisdictions.
